I have actually managed to print to this printer occassionally before I followed the steps in your response, both with PDF files and other types of files but then it seemed to hang up and not print anymore. I did not install the hotfix you suggested just because I was not confident to go changing my operating system too much as it is now stable and I am not very good at recovering when things go wrong. My problem also seemed to be a little different to the one described in the hotfix information.
I did however install the PCL 5 and Postscipt versions of the printer drivers but to no better effect than the PCL 6 version. I then decided to go back to basics and uninstalled all the printer drivers according to the instructions provided by Arthur Xie in this same forum. Follow the link below if you wish to view: I then simply plugged in the printer and let Vista find a suitable driver and it then seemed to work.
