If you're reviewing a school, I'm assuming you know what goes on in campus, the curriculum, and you've spent more than one weekend here. ANYWAY I'm about to graduate this university in a few months and I LOVED my time here.
My freshman year, I hated it. It was the definite culture shock; I'm filipino and I grew up in an extremely diverse city. So coming here is so different. I felt like I didn't fit in. The campus is mostly Caucasian, Christian, republican, females. They're working on engaging culture for sure, so that's something I can really appreciate over my four years of being here. That being said, if you're ethnic, they'll love you here.
As for being super right wing, I feel as though they've gotten a little more liberal as well, and they should if they want to push in our advancing society. They are slowly pushing towards post-modernistic views that Christians or atheists can all appreciate in some way or another. I don't call myself super Christian, but I've never felt like religion was being pushed down my throat. Some professors I didn't like (felt a tinge of racism or marginalization because of my beliefs) but almost ever professor here is cool, incredibly smart and helpful, and memorable. One thing I LOVE about this school is the small classroom size and small campus.
It benefits learning and relationships among students. The professors are amazing! The religion part? I can appreciate learning and submerging myself in a Christian setting, and I grew a lot from it. If you can't stand Christian schools, OBVIOUSLY don't go here. The staff are helpful; kinda spotty sometimes but keeping in communication with them helps if you have problems. They're always nice; I was able to find a way to graduate on time because of all their help.
I'm a commuter; they have a commuter lounge that I call my second home. I'm glad I commuted; I felt tied into the SPU community enough without losing my mind. I love this school and I will miss it once I graduate. It's expensive but the quality of education in this generation is definitely worth it.
This university disparages American veterans everywhere by eliminating the display of the American flag and it's pledge during the Veteran's Day observances (2015) at the on-campus Veteran's Day Chapel. This university doesn't want to offend the minority pacifists; who BTW are able to practice their beliefs under the very flag and veterans who, thru their sacrifices, protects their right to even have their pacifism recognized. Not to mention the freedom of religion protected by our flag. Shame on SPU. Seattle Pacific University (Friday Nov 6) re-thinks their Veterans Day observance decision AFTER receiving a massive number of complaints by the public, students and veterans everywhere.
So the question to the University elitists is, who schooled who? God Bless America. I went to SPU for my undergrad education. I have a lot of good memories of my time at SPU and met and developed relationships with a lot of amazing people.
I had some outstanding professors which I will remember forever and also had some not-so-great professors. During my time at SPU I I was challenged in my coursework and learned a lot. There were some aspects of the university that disappointed me and still disappoint me to this day.
I think that is part of attending a fairly conservative Christian university. If your opinion differs from that of the school/ affiliated denomination you may find yourself disappointed by some of their policies. Overall I had a great experience at SPU and would recommend them to other students. I do have some reservations but those are mainly due to my personal outlook and how my views contrast with the administration's policies. When I first started going to SPU as a freshman it was not very diverse at all. By the time I was a senior I noticed this had improved by leaps and bounds which is great.
I was very impressed with most of the professors I had in the business school which is where I spent the majority of my final two academic years. As a testament to how personable the school's faculty was the President would smile and say hello to students when he saw them on campus. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he knew my name. I had regular contact with the Chair of my major as well as the Dean of the business school.
I had some great exposure and experiences that just wouldn't be feasible at a larger university. SPU is one of the best Christian Universities on the West Coast! Over the years we've had quite a few friends who had children attend SPU. So we've had the chance to see the school and the academic program from both the parents, as well as the students prespective. We also have attended several of their events where outside speakers have been invited to their Palmer Lecture Series, such as Brian McLaren and Bishop Ware to name just two. These lectures are normally held next door at the First Free Methodist Church and are always packed.
The Palmer Lectures for us became a great opportunity to hear differing ideas discussed within Christian theology. I believe the other positive is the school's association with Fuller Seminar in Pasadena, CA. You can take classes at SPU by Fuller. We come to know several of the Professors at the school and think of them as friends. The academic program seems rigorous enough and everyone at the school is very supportive of the students and want them to succeed. All in all, it's a good school and we were very impressed!
This is my school. I am a freshman here who has to transfer out since it is too expensive even with financial aid. One full year of SPU was the same worth as 5 years at my in-state institution.
The worst part was not getting a lot of credits for my IB diploma while the AP kids received more of a headstart. Otherwise, this school is decent. Education quality is medium, I don't think they challenge us enough in the academics.
The more challenging courses are the SPU core courses which are theology mixed with social studies or art. But I strongly dislike the thought of being forced to take these 5-credit courses until junior year when I would rather take a bare bones theology course really.
The staff is VERY exceptional and helpful here. They care about you and help you succeed and this is one of SPU's top qualities.
Students here are definitely attending for a responsible and sober college life. With 6 months at SPU, I can say I enjoyed my time here. It was very close to the Queen Anne Ave and downtown, The culture within the school is conservative however (so keep that in mind people from blue states). Things can look very close-minded here but to them it's the norm.
I graduated from SPU in June 2011, and I am so grateful I went here. The professors are amazing. They put a lot of effort into interacting with the students and helping students out.
I participated in lots of cool research opportunities. For one of my classes, we went to Blakely Island. My dorm experience was also great.
Campus security is really helpful. They saved my butt when I locked myself out of my room, and also when someone hit my parked car.
It's a cute little school with cool buildings and pretty trees. Le Diable Et Moi Saison 1 Torrentfreak. :) Also, Gwinn (cafeteria) is awesome. This review is based on our summer camp experience here this year. We went to this university for a summer camp for my son. We were very disappointed. When we arrived, the dorm was full, so they gave us an apartment near school, if you can even call it an apartment. It's so old and beat up.
I've never live anything like this ghetto in my life. It's like in a horror movie. My kids refused to sleep there, the staffs were not even try to help us to a better living condition room. Some other parents from the camp told me that they even had to live in a basement. We had to ended up going to live with another family in a bigger room in Westly dorm.
When we signed up the summer camp, they show us very nice pictures of the new build dorms. If you are parents ever consider to attend any sort of summer camp here, good luck!
You know they are way overbooked when you try to eat at the school cafeteria on 2nd floor building, you are always lined up to the first floor all the way outside the door. It's at least a 45 minutes wait. My overall experience here was terrible.
